Austria 2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, May 28 - Thursday, June 08, 2023. We toured Austria for 12 days, starting and ending in Vienna: Wien, Wagram, Carnuntum, Burgenland, Steiermark, Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wien.

our next hotel was the Wohnothek am Ratschen, Deutsch-Schützen. On the way there, our first stop was Weingut Steindorfer, Apetlon, Burgenland.
Ernst and Roland Steindorfer were our hosts.
The visit consisted of a cellar tour and a seated tasting.
Weingut Steindorfer wines are imported in the US by Klaus Wittauer and are widely available in the Washington DC area and at the East Coast of the US.
Weingut Steindorfer, Apetlon, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
The
Steindorfer family’s viticulture tradition in Apetlon can be traced back
to 1896. Today they farm 25 acres in the southern Seewinkel area of
Burgenland. This area is also well-known as a nature reserve and bird
paradise. The wine country in this area is completely flat, and the
vineyards reach from the lake to the Hungarian border. The vineyards
close to the lake can produce beautiful, sweet wines when the fog
settles over the vines triggering botrytis. The vineyards more inland,
around the village of Apelton, are perfect for producing dry, intense
red wines from Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and Blaufränkisch grapes, and
fresh, dry white wines from Welschriesling, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay.
Flagship is the St. Laurent Reserve, a well-balanced, elegant wine with a strong concentration of dark berry flavors, spices, tannins, and vibrant acidity. This wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged for 14 months in new barriques.

The Steindorfer winery is a small family operation with 25 acres located in the village of Apetlon in the Seewinkel region of Burgenland (northern shore of Lake Neusiedl). The Steindorfer family has been engaged with wine for four generations, starting in 1896 with the grandfather of the current winemaker Ernst Steindorfer. Currently Ernst' son Roland is beginning to take on all management of the winery under his father's helpful and watchful eye.
The Steindorfer vineyards are found both around the village of
Apetlon as well as near the Lake Neusiedl shore. These two areas offer
all the Steindorfers need to make their wines. The vineyards near the
lake have perfect conditions for all levels of sweet wines due to the
warm, shallow lake and its special highly humidity microclimate, which
encourages the formation of noble rot. While the vineyards in and around
Apetlon are perfectly suited to dry, intense reds from zweigelt,
blaufränkisch and st. laurent as well as fresh, mineraled and
beautifully aromatic whites from pinot gris, welschriesling and
chardonnay. Soils range from loess, to densely packed black earth, old
sedimentary and sand. Total annual production is only 80,000 bottles.
