Germany "From Berlin to Frankfurt" 2023 (Saale Unstrut, Sachsen, Franken, Württemberg) by ombiasy WineTours took place from Monday, June 19, 2023 to Thursday, June 29, 2023.
We spent 2 1/2 days in the Saale Unstrut region.
Hotel Zufriedenheit in the quaint historic town of Naumburg, a stone's throw away from the famous Naumburg Cathedral, was our base in Saale Unstrut.
We
enjoyed a wine pairing dinner at the restaurant of Hotel Zufriedenheit with wines
from Weingut Hey and Weingut Böhme und Töchter. Both recently became
member of the VDP. Unfortunatel, we were unable to visit them on ther tour, for various reasons. Hence, a wine pairing dinner with their wines.
Weingut Hey
Today, Weingut Hey is at 5 hectares in the Naumburger Steinmeister and Naumburger Sonneck vineyards.
Son Matthias, who graduated from the enological university in Geisenheim in 2008, is now at the helm and puts the emphasis on top quality and the uniqueness of the region.
Weingut Hey is also member of the “Breitengrad 51”, an association of young winemakers of the Saale-Unstrut region. Their aim is to produce Saale-Unstrut Rieslings of world-class quality and to put the region on the map as top wine producing cultural heritage destination.
Grape varieties: Müller-Thurgau, Gutedel, Silvaner, Weißburgunder, Riesling, Blauer Zweigelt, Spätburgunder, Portugieser.
Annette Schiller and I have visited Matthias Hey twice on an ombiasy WineTours tour. These are tours that cover Germany's wine regionen in the former GDR, Saale-Unstrut and Sachsen, as well as Franken and Württemberg. The East Tours are the strongest of the 3 tours - North, South and East - when it comes to culture. The tour starts in Berlin and typically includes a visit of the Semper Opera in Dresden, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and the Opera House in Stuttgart.

Weingut Böhme und Töchter
VDP: What is so special about your winery?
Sandro Sperk: "A great wine does not grow just anywhere". – At the end of our years of wandering, we realised: It's still best at home - that's where we belong, that's where we are needed. Our family has been making wine in Gleina since 1986 - and that is why Gleina remains the centre of our work. This is where we live, this is where we press our wine. But the place where our greatest growths mature is the Freyburger Schweigenberg (single vineyard site Freyburger Edelacker). With soils of mineral-rich shell limestone and its steep southern exposure, this mountain is made for the grape varieties that are close to our hearts: Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Here they are at their best.
Weingut Böhme und Töchter was founded by Frank Böhme and his father Werner in the 1980s, before reunification. Since 2017 are his daughters Marika Sperk (with her husband Sandro Sperk) and Toska Grabowski in charge. In 2022, Weingut Böhme und Töchter was admitted to the VDP. The vineyard area totals 6 hectares today.
