Highly Recommended Read: The German Pinot Noir Miracle (Fallstaff International, August 18, 2023)

Pictures: Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting (from Barrel and from Bottle) at Weingut Rudolf Fürst, Franken, with Sebastian Fürst - Germany-East Tour 2018 by ombiasy WineTours: Wine, Art, Culture, History - Berlin, Saale-Unstrut, Sachsen, Württemberg, Franken

“Rudolf Fürst is an acknowledged Pinot magician in Germany, not just with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) but also the earlier-ripening Frühburgunder.”  Jancis Robinson MW, The Financial Times,13th November 2011.

“18 ha estate in Bürgstadt where some of the best Franconian wines are produce, especially the burgundy style Spätburgunders (rightly regarded as the finest in Germany).” Hugh Johnson, Wineguide 2012

Although Germany is closely identified with Riesling, the country is the third-largest producer of Pinot Noir in the world, behind France (Bourgogne) and the United States (Oregon).

The German name for the grape is Spätburgunder - late (spät) ripening pinot (burgunder). It was brought to Germany from Burgundy.

In the past 50 years, Pinot Noir in Germany has increased dramatically, both in terms of quantity and quality. That is the reason why people are talking about the German Pinot Noir miracle and are considering German Pinot Noir as the first alternative to wines from Burgundy.

In an excellent article in the Fallstaff International with the title "The German Pinot Noir Miracle". Ulrich Sauter, who is based in Germany, explains the German Pinot Noir miracle. It is a very well written article about what happened in Germany in terms of Pinot Noir in the past 50 years.

Highly recommended. Go here: "The German Pinot Noir Miracle"
