Dry Rieslings from Italy, Austria, Alsace and Germany at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar, presented by Annette Schiller, September 2023

Annette Schiller led a tasting of 5 dry Rieslings from Italy, Austria, Alsace and Germany (2) at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar (WWCS) on September 12, 2023.

Annette and I joined the Steering Committee of the WWCS earlier this year. This was the first tasting as members of the Steering Committee.

In addition to putting together the wine tasting, we also had to look after the cheese and the fresh baguette, for which Calvert and Woodley is the provider.

Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar (WWCS) 2023/24

WWCS:Welcome to the new year of Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar!
We are excited to bring to you new and different wines again this year.

As usual, we meet at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday nights at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, 4700 Whitehaven Parkway NW in Washington D.C. The first class will be on September 12 and will be presented by our newest member of the Steering Committee, Annette Schiller.  Annette's husband Christian shares her slot on the committee, and we are looking forward to their sharing their expertise with us.  Most of you will remember that Annette and Christian presented several classes last year and all were excellent.  Be on the lookout for Annette's email next week introducing her class.

We will be meeting every Tuesday night in the upcoming year, with the exception of a few dates that the church needs the event space.  There will be no class on November 7, and our holiday break will be a little longer this year due to a church function.  For the year-end holidays, we will be dark on December 19, 26 and January 2.

Class prices will be set according to the wines presented, and will be announced in the emails.  In general, you will note that prices are a little higher this year, in an effort to reflect our overhead (rent and insurance) and also the increased prices of good wines and cheese.

I look forward to seeing all of you at wine class this fall.  And as usual, if you have an idea for a good class, please get in touch with anyone on the steering committee.

Invitation: Dry Rieslings from Italy, Austria, Alsace and Germany at the Washington Wine and Cheese Seminar on September 12, 2023, presented by Annette Schiller

Annette Schiller: Next week Tuesday, September 12th, we are starting our weekly classes after the summer break. Since we are still in the dog days of summer, we get treated with the ultimate summer wines: crisp, dry Rieslings from high-end producers from four European countries, and from different vintages going from young to more mature. Although you might think Rieslings are sweet, but NO, 90% of all Rieslings around the world are dry, and we have excellent examples of dry Rieslings in this tasting.
Following are the Rieslings we will be sampling:
2022 Kupelwieser Fritz, Alto Adige, Südtirol, DOC, Italy
2021 Balthasar Ress, Estate, Rheingau, VDP, Germany
2020 Trimbach, Ribeauvillé, Alsace, France
2020 Von Winning, Estate, Pfalz, VDP, Germany
2019 Tegernseerhof, Loibenberg, Smaragd, Wachau, Austria

To accompany the wines, we will have baguettes and cheeses from Calvert Woodley.
The class will be held at the usual time of 7:45 at Saint Patrick’s Episcopal Church at 4700 Whitehaven Pkwy, NW. This is a 25$ class.

Join me to kick off the tasting season with these great wines.

Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday!
Annette
