2023 by ombiasy WineTours took place from Sunday, May 28 -
Thursday, June 08, 2023. We toured Austria for 12 days, starting and
ending in Vienna: Wien, Wagram, Carnuntum, Burgenland, Steiermark, Wachau, Kamptal, Kremstal, Traisental, Wien.

we left the Burgenland wine region and traveled to the southernmost Austrian wine region, the Steiermark – Styria, that borders Slovenia.
Our first stop was Weingut Neumeister in Straden in Vulkanland, Steiermark.
Christoph Neumeister was our host. After a visit of the winery, we sat down for a tasting of 12 wines.

Weingut Neumeister, Straden, Vulkanland, Steiermark
The
Neumeister winery in Straden is a family affair. Brothers Christoph and
Matthias Neumeister are the third generation running the winery and they
do this very successfully pursuing their own philosophy.
We are here in the Vulkanland part of the Steiermark that differs climatically from neighboring Südsteiermark - Southern Styra and is characterized by a mixed Illyrian-Pannonian climate. This brings warm days and cool nights as well as sufficient rainfall and a higher average temperature which in turn allows for a long growing season and late harvest. The soils are characterized by calcareous sediments which were deposited here in the Tertiary from the Alps.
Weingut Neumeister cultivates 75 acres of vineyards which are spread out over countless small parcels on very steep slopes. Some of these vineyards have reached an age of 40 years and more, and some are still single pole training, which means time-consuming manual work.
Since 2013 all vineyards have been cultivated organically. They are planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Morillon, Pinot Gris, Muskateller, and Traminer.
In 2019 Christoph Neumeister received the “vintner of the year” award from Austrian life-style magazine Falstaff.
Neumeister - Winemonger
Neumeister works roughly 35 hectares of steep hillside vineyards in and around the beautiful and quaint little town of Straden.
The vineyards surrounding the town are dominated by lime-stone deposits from the Tertiary period but also chalk deposits from Alpine run-off that occurred, well, a while back. Mixed with sandy and volcanic soils, this dirt gives rise to wines of great finesse and elegance when a winemaking philosophy such as that of the Neumeister brothers is employed: Christoph and Matthias believe that quality is first determined by clean grape material. Numerous passes in the vineyard are followed by slow and meticulous work on the sorting table. Only gravity gets to handle their grapes and long maceration times are employed to add complexity to their wines.
After fermentation on their native yeasts, the wines get to spend as much time on the fine lees as possible. Klassik wines ferment and age in steel tanks, while the cru wines ferment and age in large, neutral oak casks. Neumeister is lucky to have four cru vineyards, of which two are Premiere Cru STK vineyards, Steintal and Klausen and two are Grand Cru STK vineyards: Moarfeitl and Saziani.
A fifth vineyard that deserves special mention is the Buchberg vineyard, Styria's oldest Sauvignon Blanc vineyard, planted in 1937 and 1967. They are of course a "Stockkultur", where vines grow along a stick and are not planted in rows. At this age, they produce loose clusters with tiny berries and the resulting wines are bottled as the Alte Reben bottling. We are hoping to get a couple of cases into the warehouse.
