Announcing a German Wine Society Salon Tasting with the Schillers, McLean, NoVa, November 18, 2023

ANNOUNCING A GWS SALON TASTING WITH THE SCHILLERS!

The German Wine Society invites you to share a seated “around a big table” tasting at the home of Christian and Annette Schiller on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 6 pm.  The Schillers’ address is 6404 Woodsong Court, McLean, Virginia, 22101.

Members may recall that the Schillers hosted a number of popular small-attendance salons at their home several years ago.  Capacity for this event will be strictly limited to 15 guests, plus the Schllers for a total of 17, so the GWS is making this event available to current members only by email notice, and not posting it on the chapter website or Meetup.  To register for this event, please respond by email to both Chapter President and Secretary Carl Willner, at carl.willner1@verizon.net, and also to Chapter Vice President Christian Schiller at cgeschiller@gmail.com .

The event is first come first served, and the first 15 registrations to be received will be sent a confirmation notice of their signup.  Only reservations for a single individual or a couple will be accepted, so as to allow more opportunities to attend.  Registrations are due by Sunday, November 12, 2023.  If you are not sure whether your membership is current (dues paid for the current year), please check with the Secretary at the above address. Though the event is not posted on line, if you need to renew your membership ($35 for an individual or couple), it is possible to pay dues online using PayPal, and then sign up by email to attend the event, or to send a check for renewal, made out to the German Wine Society and mailed to Carl Willner at 1014 Reserve Champion Drive, Rockville, MD 20850.  If you are sending a check to renew membership, please let the Secretary know by email that you have done so at or before the time you register for the event.

We also invite you to participate in the selection of wines for the event. Each attendee should bring one bottle of their favorite German or Austrian wine, minimum retail value $25.  Please let Christian Schiller know in advance which wine you would propose to bring, to help avoid duplications and aid with the food pairings.  The wines will be accompanied by a selection of Chinese dishes obtained by the Schillers from chef Peter Chang, who just opened a new restaurant in McLean.  Baguettes and cheeses will also be available throughout the tasting.  We have been contemplating an Asian pairing event this year and this smaller event will give us the opportunity to experiment, possibly leading to a larger Asian-themed event in the future.

In addition to bringing a bottle of wine, attendees will need to provide a modest participation fee of $25 per person to defray food costs.  Payment can be made either by check written to the German Wine Society and sent in advance to Carl Willner at the above address, or by check or cash at the event.

Please bear in mind that, as consumption of wine can lead to intoxication, attendees should rely on a designated driver, come by cab or other rental vehicle, or taste rather than fully consuming the wines offered.  The closest Metro stop ia the McLean station on the Silver Line, though some distance away from the Schillers’ home,  Attendees will find it easiest to arrive by car, cab or other hired vehicle, or bus to McLean (Metrobus 23 T, A from McLean station to Old Dominion and 6th Place is a 5 minute walk from the Schillers).

While there are no special requirements for covid-19 vaccination or masking, if anyone planning to attend contracts or tests positive for covid-19 or other communicable disease, please refrain from attending so as to protect the other guests, and let us know in time to offer the opportunity to come to another interested person.

Questions about this event can be directed to Christian Schiller at the above email address, or phone to (703) 992-3987.
