Tasting with Owner Yseult de Gaye-Nony of Vignobles de Gaye (Pomerol and Saint-Emilion) in Washington DC, USA

Owner Yseult de Gaye-Nony of Vignobles de Gaye in Pomerol and Saint-Emilion was in town (McLean, Virginia) and we were able to meet her and taste her wonderful wines at Total Wine and More McLean.

In addition to tasting her wines we had a chance to agree with her that we will visit her in Bordeaux with the next Bordeaux Wine Tour by ombiasy WineTours, scheduled for 2024.

There is not Bordeaux Tour planned for 2023, but Bordeaux 2022 by ombiasy WineTours was one of the 3 tours Annette did in 2023 after the corona break of the the two previous years.

Vignobles de Gaye

Famille de Gaye: We could say that the relationship between the de Gaye family and wine began in 2005 when Stéphane de Gaye bought the Château Grand Corbin Manuel - Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and entrusted the keys to his daughter, Yseult.

The young woman, who was only 25 years old, thus returned to the classroom. But she mostly learned on the job, particularly in the vineyards where she actively participated in all the activities involved in a viticultural year.

Ten years later and her education complete, the family bought the neighbouring property, the Château Haut-Cadet Saint-Émilion Grand Cru.

Meanwhile, de Gaye’s vineyards grew with the Château La Création in Pomerol in 2012 and Château Sainte Barbe en Bordeaux Supérieur the following year, managed by Brice, Yseult’s brother.

Indeed, Stéphane de Gaye comes from a family of several generations of Saint-Émilion winegrowers. His maternal grandfather, Jean-Prosper Robin, was already an established trader and the owner of Château Sansonnet when he acquired La Couspaude in 1908, which he handed down to André-Marcel, the eldest of his three children. This Classified Grand Cru, at the top of the plateau of Saint-Émilion, is still owned by the family. His daughter Denyse, Stéphane’s mother, inherited an estate in Pomerol, which she sold in 1975.

The Château Haut-Cadet identifies a very charming Saint-Émilion Grand Cru which can be enjoyed sooner. It seduces through its notes of summer fruits (raspberry, wild strawberry) and the suppleness of its mouthfeel.

The heavy blue clay soils of the Château Grand Corbin Manuel - Saint-Émilion Grand Cru produce a wine with depth and concentration, with a long finish and a great ageing potential. The grapes are harvested when perfectly ripe to produce a balanced wine: on the palate, it is full-bodied, with aromas of ripe fruit (Morello cherry, blackcurrant) and sweet spices but it retains freshness; robust, with smooth tannins.

The gravelled terraces of La Création provide the wine with all the finesse and elegance that sets the Pomerol appellation apart. The wine is slender, and delicate. With specific fruits and silky tannins. The Cabernet Franc, which is particularly well suited to these soils, reveals its full potential here. This dominant grape variety produces a virtually unrivalled proportion in the rest of the appellation. It provides the wine with delicacy, minerality, and violet and white pepper fragrances.
