Vineyard Tour, Cellar Tour and Tasting at Weingut Van Volxem (VDP) in Wiltingen, Saar, with Lukas Büchner - Germany Rhein-Mosel-Nahe 2024 by ombiasy WineTours

Germany Rhein-Mosel-Nahe 2024 by ombiasy WineTours took place from August 28 – Friday, September 06, 2024. We spent 10 days visiting top wine estates in five wine regions, tasting fabulous Rieslings and Pinot Noir (aka Spätburgunder), meeting world-renowned wine makers, travelling through the world’smost beautiful wine regions, cruising on the romantic Rhein river, looking at dizzying steep vineyards along the Rhein and Mosel rivers, and delving deep into German history and culture: Rheinhessen • Rheingau • Mittelrhein • Mosel • Nahe

Today, we went to a relatively unknown part of the Mosel, the Upper Mosel, had lunch in Luxembourg, spent the afternoon at the Saar and finished the day at Restaurant Dian im Deinhard's in Bernkastel-Kues with an Asian wine-pairing dinner orchestrated by Janet Cam and Annette Schiller.

Saar: At Van Volxem Weingut & Vinothek in Wiltingen we were back in the well-known part of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Owner Roman Niewodniczanski was away in Nice/ France buying cheese for the GG presentation the following weekend, but @Lukas Büchner gave us a highly educational and entertaining tour and tasting of the #worldclass Van Volxem wines.

Weingut Van Volxem (VDP) in Wiltingen, Saar Valley

The Saar, a tributary to the Mosel river gives name to one of the two unique sup-regions of the Mosel wine region where crisp, more masculine Rieslings are made. Here we are back in the typical Mosel slate terroir. Famous Frank Schoonmaker wrote 1956 in ‘The Wines of Germany’: “In these great and exceedingly rare wines of the Saar, there is a combination of qualities which I can perhaps best describe as indescribable – austerity coupled with delicacy and extreme finesse, an incomparable bouquet, a clean, very attractive hardness tempered by a wealth of fruit and flavor which is overwhelming.”

Weingut Van Volxem is one of the oldest wineries in the region. As a result of the secularization during the reign of Napoleon, the winery was acquired by the beer brewer Gustav Van Volxem from Trier. It remained for 4 generations in the Van Volxem family, before it was purchased by Peter Jordan in 1993 (Weingut Jordan & Jordan). Finally, in 1999, it was bought by Roman Niewodniczanski and revived under the old name Weingut Van Volxem. With Roman taking over, the circle has once again become complete, with the Niewodniczanski family owning the Bitburger brewery.

Roman Niewodniczanski bought Weingut Van Volxem with 30 acres of vineyards, of which he sold 4 hectares. Today, Weingut Van Volxem’s vineyard area totals around 180 acres. Van Volxem has become the biggest producer in the Mosel region. In buying new vineyards, Roman’s guiding philosophy was to find the most prized vineyards of the early 20th century, planted with the oldest vines possible (sometimes topping 120 years). His winemaking philosophy is: no fining, no filtration, no herbicides, low yields,
manual harvesting, using spontaneous fermentation.

Roman’s expansion project culminated in 2019 with the completion of a state-of-the-art Napa style winery.

Van Volxem/ wine-searcher

Van Volxem is a German wine producer located in Wiltingen, in Germany's Saar region. It is known for its mineral-rich, dry Riesling wines. These are vinified to emulate the famous Saar wines of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The estate lies on the foundations of a Roman villa and its vineyards are some of the oldest in the region. It is said to have been first planted to vine in the 3rd century.

In 2000, Roman Niewodniczanski acquired the estate, after four generations of ownership by the Van Volxem family. He expanded the estate, acquiring additional holdings at top vineyards, including in the Grosse Lage Goldberg, Scharzhofberger, Volz, Altenberg and Wiltinger Gottesfuss sites.

Most of Van Volxem's vineyards are located on the Saar's south-facing slate slopes where vines receive optimum sunlight for ripening. Van Volxem farms over 60 hectares (148 acres) of vineyard land on these steep slate slopes, planted almost entirely to Riesling.

Many of the estate's vines remain ungrafted and vineyard soils are primarily composed of Devonian slate. One of Van Voxlem's top wines, from the Grosse Lage Wiltinger Gottesfuss site, is produced with fruit from ungrafted, 120-year-old vines grown on a steep, red slate slope.

Van Volxem's wines are mostly fermented dry or off-dry with indigenous yeasts. The estate is a member of the VDP and produces a range of Riesling wines according to the association's strict standards.

It also bottles a small amount of Sekt from Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay. In total, Van Volxem produces around 300,000 bottles annually.

Lunch and Tasting at Weingut Van Volxem with Owner Roman Niewodniczanski in 2015

We visited Weingut Van Volxem the 2015 Germany-North Tour by ombiasy WineTours. Roman was our host. We had a wine tasting and lunch, prepared by his charming wife, with him. After lunch and wine tasting, we went with him on a vineyard tour.
