From June 16 to July 3, 2025, Annette and I spent time in wine country Italy, by car.
For an overview of the whole trip, go here: Wine Country Italy - Lake Como, Tuscany, Alto Adige - in the Summer of 2025
Fourth Stop: Montalcino and Montepulciano (Tuscany)
From Chianti Classico we drove to Montalcino and stayed 2 nights at La Ragnaie, a well-known Montalcino winery which also has 12 rooms.
One day we focused on Brunello di Montalcino producers and one day on Vino Nobile de Montepulciano producers.
On both nights we had dinner in the village of Montalcino.
Visit of Poderi Boscarelli
Poderi Boscarelli (GoogleAI based)
Poderi Boscarelli is a renowned family-run winery located in the Montepulciano winemaking area of Tuscany, Italy.
Family-Owned and Operated: The winery was established in 1962 by Egidio Corradi, and is now overseen by his daughter, Paola De Ferrari Corradi, and her sons, Luca and Nicolò.
Focus on Sangiovese: The primary grape varietal cultivated is Sangiovese (specifically Prugnolo Gentile), which makes up about 80% of their vineyard plantings. They also grow other local varieties like Mammolo, Canaiolo, and Colorino, as well as some international varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Production: Poderi Boscarelli produces approximately 100,000 bottles of wine annually, with a strong focus on Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
Wines: Their wines include Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG (including a Riserva and a Riserva "Sotto Casa"), Rosso di Montepulciano, and other reds. Their Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sotto Casa Riserva (2011) has been particularly noted.
Terroir: The vineyards are located in Cervognano and are known for their limestone and sand soils, which contribute to the wines' minerality and character.
Winemaking Philosophy: The winery emphasizes expressing the diversity of their soils and clonal selections through their wines. Grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness, and each selection is fermented separately before blending.
Poderi Boscarelli is a Tuscan wine producer based in the village of Cervognano di Montepulciano, just east of Montepulciano proper. The estate was founded by Egidio Corradi in 1962, and today devotes the majority of its winemaking to the production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.
The estate consists of 14 hectares (35 acres) of vineyards planted to approximately 80 percent Sangiovese, with the remaining 20 percent dedicated to native grape varieties including Canaiolo, Colorino and Mammolo, as well as the internationally recognized Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties.
Poderi Boscarelli also holds a two-hectare (five-acre) vineyard planted to Merlot in the small wine producing region of Cortona, 30km (20 miles) northeast of Montepulciano.
The estate produced its first vintage of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 1968, and today makes approximately 50,000 bottles of this wine per year. The grapes are hand-harvested from vines that are planted in sandy, mineral-rich soils.
This Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine has a characteristic blend of 85 percent Sangiovese, with smaller quantities of Colorino, Canaiolo and Mammolo. These grapes are fermented with natural yeasts and the wine aged in Allier or Slavonian oak casks for 18-24 months.
The original Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine is now complemented by several single-vineyard and riserva expressions.
The estate's wine portfolio has been further bolstered with the production of a single Rosso di Montepulciano, a 100 percent Merlot Cortona and two red wines under the IGT Toscana designation. In addition, Poderi Boscarelli makes a Vin Santo di Montepulciano and an extra virgin olive oil.
