Alto Adige 2026 by ombiasy WineTours, led by Annette Schiller, took place from Sunday, September 06 - Sunday, September 13, 2026.
Being
the northernmost wine region of Italy, Alto Adige is a very
special place where Italian and German traditions merge. It is a
fascinating and unique region in the Alpes. It boasts of an
extraordinary variety of landscapes: snow-capped mountains in the
Dolomites, fertile valleys, streams, century-old breathtakingly
beautiful towns true to their hybrid Germanic-Italian culture.
During this tour we did not change
hotels. We stayed 7 nights at the famous, beautiful 5-star Art-Nouveau
style Parkhotel Laurin in Bozen.

The program for the third day was:
(1) Klosterkellerei Kloster Muri Gries.
Muri-Gries is a historic Benedictine monastery and winery known for its Lagrein wines, dating back to the 13th century. The visit included a tour of the monastery, the famous Klosteranger vineyard and the wine cellar as well as a tasting of the wine portfolio. Technical Director Manfred Bernhard joined us for a part of the tour and the tasting.
(2) Cantina Nals Margreid. Winery tour and tasting.
(3) Lunch @Gasthof Apollonia, a Michelin rated historic inn up in the mountains with stunning panoramic views of the Dolomites and traditional South Tyrolean cuisine.
(4) Visit of Weingut Untermoserhof in St. Magdalena.
Current owner and winemaker Florian Ramoser was our host, along with his father Georg Ramoser. This winery belongs to the group of small family owned wineries, which account for 10% of the wine production in Alto Adige. Large private wineries account for 20% and co-operatives for 70%. Importantly, the co-ops in Alto Adige are all elite wine producers, with the co-operative Terlan probably being the flagship producer of the area. Florian's #worldclass wines are available in the USA through Schatzi Wines
(5) Winding down with a bottle of Lagrein at Toma by Lisa wine bar, our favorite wine bar in Bozen.
Klosterkellerei Muri-Gries in Bolzano
Muri-Gries occupies a former Augustinian monastery in Gries, a district on Bolzano's northern edge
that has been effectively absorbed into the city while retaining its own identity around the abbey
walls.
An Augustinian community first settled here in the twelfth century; after flooding destroyed
their original site in 1406, Duke Leopold of Austria granted them an eleventh-century castle in
Gries, and in 1845 Benedictine monks from Muri Abbey in Switzerland took over the complex,
giving the estate its present name and reviving its winemaking tradition.
What makes Muri-Gries
distinctive is its vineyard: a walled, 6.8 acres plot called the Klosteranger sits directly behind the
monastery, its ancient stone walls trapping heat and creating a warm microclimate ideally suited to
Lagrein, South Tyrol's signature dark-skinned red grape. This site is considered a grand cru for the
variety, and the monastery's Lagrein wines, including the barrique-aged "Abtei Muri" Riserva, first
produced in 1989, helped establish Muri-Gries's reputation as South Tyrol's "Lagrein monastery."
Beyond the Klosteranger, the Benedictine community owns about 85 acres in and around Bozen and
the Eppan plateau, also producing notable Pinot Blanc and Gewürztraminer.
To visit the cellars we
had to pass through the monastery's own cloister, a reminder that here, as at so many Alpine
abbeys, winemaking and religious life have been intertwined for centuries, with the vineyard
functioning as both livelihood and garden.
The visit included a tour of the monastery, the famous Klosteranger vineyard and the wine cellar as well as a tasting of the wine portfolio. Technical Director Manfred Bernhard joined us for a part of the tour and the tasting.
