Tasting the Wines of Paradise Springs Winery - a Bi-coastal Winery in the US Making Wine both in Clifton, Virginia, and Santa Barbara, California, at the NoVa Chapter (Chair: Graydon Vandament) of the American Wine Society

Invitation

We have a very interesting presentation for our upcoming October 2nd meeting, where we will welcome Kirk Wiles, the co-founder of Paradise Springs Winery, which produces wines on both the East and West coasts.

Kirk, a business graduate of the University of Miami (FL), started Paradise Springs Winery in 2007 at the age of 24 in Clifton, VA with co-founder, Jane Kincheloe. In 2014, Paradise Springs opened a second winery operation in Santa Barbara, California producing around 3,000 cases annually, making it the first bi-coastal winery brand in the country.

Paradise Springs’ Virginia winery is located on a historic 36-acre property just outside of Washington DC. The land was granted to the Kincheloe family in 1716 and features a log cabin built in the early 1800's and renovated by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Today, the winery produces 10,000 cases of Virginia wine annually, featuring varietals such as Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Viognier, and more.

Paradise Springs’ California winery is located in Santa Barbara. It focuses on high quality, small production wines from the Sta. Rita Hills and Happy Canyon AVAs. The upscale modern tasting room is located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara's The Funk Zone just two blocks away from the ocean.

This west coast facility produces 3,500 cases annually, featuring varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Bordeaux-stye varieties.

As Paradise Springs continues to build a stellar reputation on each coast locally, the brand wants to continue to get their wines into glasses in new markets that have an appreciation for fine wine to showcase the underrated quality of both the Virginia and Santa Barbara wine growing regions.

Paradise Springs Winery

Founded by Kirk Wiles, Paradise Springs Winery is the first bi-coastal winery in the United States, making wine in both Clifton, Virginia and Santa Barbara, California.

East Coast: Clifton, Virginia

The Estate: Located roughly 30 miles outside of Washington, D.C., this historic 36-acre property has been in the founding family for generations. The venue blends history and architecture, featuring a relocated 1856 red barn and an early 1800s log cabin renovated in 1955 under the design influence of Frank Lloyd Wright.

The Wine Profile: Virginia’s variable climate requires expert blending. The estate heavily features Petit Manseng, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Tannat.

Flagship Bottles include PVT (a robust 50/50 blend of Petit Verdot and Tannat built for aging), The Moment (a premium Bordeaux-style blend), and Barrel One (a highly exclusive estate-grown Cabernet Franc).

West Coast: Santa Barbara, California

The Tasting Room: Opened in late 2017, this upscale, modern urban tasting room is nestled in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara's popular Funk Zone, situated just two blocks from the ocean.

The Wine Profile: Rather than replicating the East Coast menu, the West Coast branch highlights regional terroir by sourcing fruit from the premier Micro-AVAs of Santa Barbara County, specifically Sta. Rita Hills (for cool-climate Burgundian styles) and Happy Canyon (for warmer Bordeaux varietals). They partner locally with esteemed winemaker Doug Margerum to produce small-production Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Syrah.
